Phlebotomy Technician (PH)

Phlebotomy Program Overview

  • Duration: 4-week total program (3 weeks of classes + 1 week externship)
  • Tuesday – Thursday (8:00 AM – 2:00 PM)
  • Semester Credits: 6.0 (89 clock hours)
  • Goal: Master the essential skills, knowledge, and professional standards needed to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician.

Key Learning Areas

  1. Blood Specimen Collection & Analysis: Venipuncture, capillary punctures, safety protocols.
  2. Lectures & Conferences: Detailed study of best practices in phlebotomy, patient communication, and lab procedures.
  3. Clinical Experience: Hands-on training to develop real-world proficiency.
  4. Certification Exam Prep: Upon completion, you’ll be eligible for the National Phlebotomy Certification (NHA) and/or State of California Licensure exams.

Certification Requirements

All applicants should be of good moral character and hold a high school diploma or equivalent. One of the following must apply:

  1. Graduate from an approved phlebotomy program accredited by a recognized agency or approved by the State’s Department of Education.
  2. Have documentation of at least one year of work experience as a phlebotomy technician.
  3. Already possess a recognized National Phlebotomy Certification from another organization.

Additionally, 50 venipunctures and 10 capillaries must be completed.

Admission Requirements & Process

  1. MCC Application (Admission Office)
  2. Physical Exam & Immunizations
    • Must be up-to-date and confirm you’re in good health.
  3. CPR Certification
    • For healthcare providers or professional rescuers (if needed, MCC can provide).
  4. Social Security Card & Valid ID
    • Required for enrollment documentation.
  5. Live Scan Fingerprinting
    • Mandatory background clearance.
  6. Optional Insurance
    • MCC does not provide personal liability/health coverage, but you may purchase it independently.

Note: If, at any time—before or after acceptance—a student’s physical or emotional health is deemed a potential threat to patient well-being, they may be denied admission or withdrawn from the program.

Attendance

  • Students are expected to attend daily, all day, on time.
  • Make-up classes are offered only if absolutely necessary.

Health & Safety

  • Applicants must be in good health. A health examination is required.
  • Proper handling of specimens is paramount to patient safety and accurate results.

  • Phlebotomy Technicians must work effectively under pressure, communicate well, and maintain a high level of skillful, safe practice.
  • Building trust and confidence with patients is essential.
